However, the Playon! Other file formats are fine, xvid, iso, ifo, vob etc. Not too sure if this reply is any use to you, well hope at least the part about it connecting ok with usb dvd drive is useful.

But I guess its because it a product of WD which of course sells Hard Drives as its flagship product so removing that option forces you to buy a lot of hard drives for backups they're hoping you pick WD drives lol.. Wdtv media player can't recognize my drives. WD Support online shows a set of instruction guides with screenshots, etc. I have even disconnected the unit from the router. I have reset the unit , restarted the unit with the USB already connected and connected after the boot up, but no joy…!?

Basicly having to buy somekind of home theator just to get the optical sound plug. Then I might just as well have just bought a more expensive HD media player. Like Like. Gunnar, have a look at these comments and see if the advice works for you. Also, try not to use a hard drive — just use a regular USB stick. Just bought this thing and my mkv files are really annoying.
Would like to see if the update will fix this but I can never get this damn folder to pop up. Is there a special name for the folder like on the PS3? Their firmware update is easy just name the folder PS3 and it finds it with no problem. It should recognize it. Thats it. Hope this helps. MKV audio problem. Some work but others do not. I cannot test the optical sound theory since none of my hardware has an optical in.
We are due for another firmware update! The software must not support certain audio codecs within the MKV file. It should work like VLC which plays anything. I think the new players are being shipped with version 1.
